When To Get Treatment Elmhurst
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child should have an orthodontic examination at age seven. However, many times we end-up placing our patients on recall/observation while waiting for more teeth to erupt…
I will promise you that I will NOT do any orthodontic treatment unless is really necessary and the patient is ready!
If in doubt, call us for a complimentary consultation!
While orthodontic treatment can improve smiles at any age, there may be an optimal time for individual patients to begin treatment in order to achieve maximum improvement in a minimum amount of time. Most orthodontists recommend that treatment begins at an early stage as it is easier to correct the problems and children’s mouths are more responsive to treatment which means that they will not have to wear braces for as long as adults. Nonetheless, this does not mean that adults are too old for braces. It is quite the contrary. Orthodontic treatment can be performed on adults of almost any age as long as the gums and teeth are in healthy condition.
Just to make sure, we do require all our adult patients to get clearance from their general dentist and a periodontist before starting the treatment, to avoid potential bone loss and periodontal problems and complications.
Most “malocclusions” or bad bites are inherited. These include crowding or spacing of the teeth, extra or missing teeth, irregularities of the jaws and face, cleft lips and palates etc. Some malocclusions are acquired. They can be caused by tongue thrusting, finger sucking, dental disease, early loss of baby and permanent teeth, accidents or injuries. Without treatment, these problems will become worse. Crooked, rotated and crowded teeth that are hard to clean may cause tooth decay, eventual gum disease and tooth loss. When left untreated for a long time, a bad bite can cause abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, difficulty in chewing, excess stress on the supporting bone, gums and jaw joints.
A HEALTHIER, MORE ATTRACTIVE SMILE is a LOT easier to clean and maintain.
