Our periodontist in Elmhurst & Downers Grove, Dr. Jingyuan Fan, is a specialist in her field. She is skilled and experienced in periodontal surgical procedures. Periodontal surgery may be recommended if gum disease has advanced to the point where a deep cleaning, known as scaling and root planing, will not effectively treat the disease because the gum pockets are too deep to be properly cleaned. Some procedures that Dr. Fan performs include:
Sometimes, a periodontal pocket reduction procedure is recommended because you have pockets that are too deep to clean with daily oral hygiene and a professional maintenance therapy.
During this procedure, the gum tissue is opened, and disease-causing bacteria is removed before closing the tissue into place. This allows the gum tissue to better reattach to healthy bone and root and decrease the chance of losing your natural teeth.
In some cases, bone graft and/or growth factors may be applied to stimulate new tissue growth to repair the areas that have been damaged by the periodontal disease.
Bone grafting involves taking a part of a bone from another area of your body or using a special materials to graft it onto the jaw bone. This encourages growth of a new and stronger bone which can make any dental implants that are placed more secure.
