Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning procedure that our periodontist in Elmhurst and Downers Grove, Dr. Jingyuan Fan, performs when a person has periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease.
Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) involves removing plaque and tartar from deep gum pockets and smoothing the tooth root to remove bacterial toxins. This is a deeper cleaning than the traditional cleanings you receive from your general dentist. Dr. Fan will clean deep within the gum line in the areas that cannot be reached with the toothbrush. Scaling and root planing treatment can be essential for many patients to prevent tooth loss, which is a common result of untreated gum disease.
Scaling: This is the part of the process where Dr. Fan will eliminate plaque and tartar buildup all the way down to the bottom of the gum pockets.
Root Planing: After the deep clean (scaling) is complete, Dr. Fan will “plane” or cover your teeth, which allows gum tissue to heal and re-attach to the teeth.
After scaling and root planing, many patients do not require any further active treatment. However, the majority of patients will require long-term maintenance to sustain good oral health and prevent further damage to the teeth and gums.
