FAQ

At Premier Orthodontics and Dental Specialists, we understand that starting orthodontic treatment can bring up a lot of questions. Our team is here to make sure you feel confident and informed from day one. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from patients and families.

Dentists and orthodontists both help keep your smile healthy, but their roles are different. Dentists focus on general dental care like cleanings, fillings, and crowns. Orthodontists go through extra years of training to specialize in fixing bite problems and straightening teeth with braces, aligners, and other tools. If your goal is to correct alignment or improve your bite, seeing an orthodontist is the right choice.

There are a few signs that might mean it’s time to consider orthodontic treatment. These include:

  • Crowded or crooked teeth
  • Noticeable gaps between teeth
  • An overbite, underbite, or open bite
  • Trouble chewing or biting properly
  • Clicking or shifting in the jaw
  • Thumb-sucking beyond early childhood

If you or your child shows any of these signs, we can schedule an evaluation to see if braces or another treatment would help.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic checkup by age 7. At this age, we can spot developing bite or jaw issues early while growth is still happening, giving your child the best chance for a healthy, confident smile.

Orthodontic care goes beyond just improving how your smile looks. It can also:

  • Help your jaw work more comfortably and efficiently
  • Make brushing and flossing easier by aligning your teeth
  • Protect your teeth from uneven wear or damage
  • Improve speech and chewing
  • Boost your self-confidence with a straighter smile

Everyone’s smile is different, so treatment times can vary. Most patients finish their braces treatment in about 18 to 24 months. Some may need less time, while more complex cases could take longer. At your first visit, Dr. Radu will go over your specific treatment plan and give you a timeline tailored just for you.

You’ll typically come in every 4 to 8 weeks. These visits are quick and important—they let us check your progress and make any needed adjustments. Staying consistent with your appointments helps keep your treatment moving forward and on schedule.

No shots are needed during regular orthodontic care. Getting braces, aligners, or adjustments doesn’t involve any injections, so there’s no need to worry.

Absolutely! Wearing your retainer is key to keeping your teeth in their new positions. After braces come off, you’ll likely wear it full time for a few months, then at night. This helps prevent your teeth from shifting and protects your new smile for the long haul.

It’s natural for teeth to shift a little over time, especially with habits like chewing or clenching, or simply due to aging. That’s why wearing your retainer as directed is so important, it helps maintain your smile and keeps everything in place long after braces are off.

Yes, we’re happy to welcome transfer patients. Whether you’ve moved to the area or are switching orthodontists, our team will review your progress and create a plan to continue your care without missing a beat.
